Get a set of Progresive springs, some 15 weight oil and some new seals and you'll get rid of the spongy front end. The oil in the forks just dampens recoil.

Honda has 7w and 10w. One is clear and the other is red. I think ATF comes out to 5 or 7w, off the top of my head. My 88 called for ATF, but with progressive springs, it was WAY to thin. I went with 10W and that was the ticket. A Clymer manual lists the weights for the different years.

Only yesterday, I changed my CX500's fork oil from ancient (though not particularly high mileage) ATF oil, and replaced it with 15W fork oil. Surprisingly, the old ATF oil still had some of it's red colour. The bike now feels more stable in bends than previously, and doesn't dive nearly as much under braking.
